How To Get Your Yard Ready For A Summer Gathering

August 26, 2021

Summer is filled with holiday weekends that are perfect for hosting friends and family. Before you send out the invites to your summer gathering, take the proper steps to ensure that your yard is a comfortable, pest-free, and safe area for your celebration. Over the next few weeks, be sure to spend some time in your yard looking for the following:

  1. Check for fire ants in your yard and treat fire ant mounds with a drench per the label. Dealing with these ants before your gathering can save you the headache of dealing with them on the spot, and your guests the pain of accidentally stepping in the wrong place.
  2. Look for areas in your yard that might hold water, which could easily harbor mosquitoes. Buckets, kid’s toys, and anything else that holds water should be emptied now to remove a breeding habitat for these bloodsuckers.
  3. Inspect for wasps underneath your grill, the swing set, and any outdoor chairs and picnic tables. Wasp spray is readily available, easy to use, and provides a quick fix to remove aggressive paper wasps. These insect pests are much less painful to address now, instead of when you are flipping burgers and hotdogs on the grill.
  4. If you are going to be shooting fireworks, having a bonfire, or doing anything with sparks, be sure to remove any piles of flammable vegetation from the yard before reaching for a lighter. Dried leaves, grass clippings, or dry branches can be a hazard if sparks start to fly. Have a garden hose on standby just in case you need it.
