FAQs

What services do you provide?

We provide full-service facility support to K-12 schools, private and independent schools, and colleges and universities in three areas – custodial, grounds management, and plant operations and maintenance. Each program is fully customized based on educational institution’s needs.

If SSC takes over facilities for my school, what happens to the current employees?

We make every effort to retain existing employees and transition them to SSC. We understand the value of people in an organization, especially in close-knit educational environments. Many of the people who work in our educational facilities have long histories there, and we understand that students, staff and parents think of those employees as family. Our commitment is to make sure all associates have new opportunities for growth, as well as new benefits to help improve the quality of their lives and the lives of their families.

What makes you better than your competitors?

First and foremost, our people are the best in the business. Many of our team members started with SSC decades ago and bring exceptional working knowledge of the industry to the table. Likewise, other team members are new to SSC, but are experts in their respective fields. We also focus on training, developing and mentoring our team so we can all continue to be the best we can be. Finally, we offer ongoing and comprehensive corporate support to our team members in the field, ensuring that each site has the resources and people they need to provide excellent service.

Do you provide any other special or unique services?

Yes. Our programs can be tailored to meet our clients’ exact needs. For example, we can do a facilities condition assessment so that we can recommend and implement deferred maintenance over time. Our grounds program can include athletic field management from certified specialists. We even have certified arborists on staff who can design landscape plans based on your climate zone.

Can I work with SSC to customize a plan that is unique to my needs?

Yes. Each and every client we have is special to us. We know that cookie-cutter programs simply won’t work. Every organization faces unique challenges, so you need a team that will actually listen and respond to your needs and desires instead of just delivering the same boxed recipe every time. This personalized, one-on-one approach allows us to ensure each and every customer receives the quality service we promise.

Isn’t outsourcing really expensive?

It might seem so at first, but over time, our clients see that outsourcing actually saves them money, which can then be re-invested into their educational facility. Often, we can match the same facility spend a school district or university currently spends, but with noticeable improvements. Our ongoing support also helps mitigate future expenses.

Why do I even need to outsource? Can’t my regular staff already handle this?

Most school districts and colleges think they can adequately handle support services, and sometimes, they can – adequately. We offer exceptional service that goes far beyond adequate. The reality is, most self-operated accounts rely on either a school principal for K-12, or a general facilities manager for higher education. This means there aren’t subject matter experts who are training, inspecting and evaluating each program. In addition, there isn’t always a focus on new technologies or other advancements because self-operated programs are spread so thin. Finally, allowing us to focus on your facilities allows you to focus on your students and staff.

Does SSC care about the environment?

Yes! We have switched to sustainable products like bamboo, used goats to maintain fire barriers, and helped our campuses retrofit their facilities to reduce water waste and maximize energy efficiency. Most recently, we made a commitment to transition from gas-powered mowers to electric mowers at all sites. In total, these changes will reduce our carbon footprint by more than 53 million pounds over the next five years. That’s the equivalent of building 51 wind turbines or planting 4 million trees and letting them grow for 10 years!

What are some of the benefits of outsourcing to the campus or school district?

Every site is different, but the benefits are consistent across the board. There are abundant cost savings – the fixed annual expense makes it easier to budget, SSC takes on the custodial staff workers compensation, and there is reduction of administrative and HR time and expense. There is improved quality, efficiency, and consistency, and our clean and well-maintained facilities increase student achievement and staff engagement.

What are some of the benefits of outsourcing to the existing school or university employees?

There are several! Most notably, employees have exceptional career growth opportunities, both through SSC and through our parent company of Compass Group. We offer competitive health care rates, a 401(k) plan with company match, the opportunity to obtain licenses and certifications, consistent training, employee recognition awards and programs, employee discounts, and much more.

Can you give me an example of how SSC uses technology?

We have several unique technological advantages. For example, we have a drone we use for roof inspections, complete with thermal capability to find hot or cold spots. We use robotic mowers that run early in the morning so intramural fields are freshly mowed for students to use. We measure water levels of soil so we know how to properly irrigate to avoid over- or under-watering.

What does SSC do to give back to the community?

When we become your partner, your mission, beliefs, and aspirations for the future become ours. We are far more than cleaners, technicians, and managers. We live, work, and play in the communities we serve. We focus on several community projects each year: the Save Water\Give Life project, in which we sponsor a team of students to dig new wells for fresh drinking water in third-world countries; scholarships that benefit local school districts and students; student internships with guaranteed employment upon completion; student work programs; canned food drives; walk for life relays; volunteer days at local food banks and charities, and much more.
